Here at Brunnenstraße 154, AMIGA produced recordings in one of its five studios.
GDR musical icons such as Karat, the Puhdys, and Silly also produced their hits here.
The most famous of these is arguably “Über sieben Brücken…” by Karat.
In 1954, the company—originally founded by Ernst Busch—was nationalized.
“VEB Deutsche Schallplatten Berlin” was subsequently split into two labels: Amiga
and Eterna, with the latter dedicated exclusively to classical music.
Naturally, AMIGA achieved its highest sales figures within the GDR in the genre
of dance and light entertainment music.
However, everything was dictated by the GDR’s ruling elite.
During the 1980s, many bands and artists attempted to poetically embed hidden
messages within their songs.
And often, improvisation was required—or one had to be inventive—sometimes utilizing
imported equipment or even producing tracks in West Berlin in order to meet
the expectations of both musicians and consumers.
In the West, the label managed to sell an impressive 480,000 records.
With the sale of licensing rights to West German publishers following the fall
of the Berlin Wall, AMIGA unfortunately became a thing of the past.
