Site of Morey Freehold mine

Situated 250 metres southeast of the intersection and also within Linton Park, the site is defined by rows of pine trees and dominated by a large mullock heap. This mine, which was a significant one in terms of production at Linton, was owned by Edward Morey, a successful mine owner in the Ballarat district, and operated from about 1872 to 1878. Morey had been elected a member of the Legislative Council in 1869 and in the same year, had purchased 1000 acres of Linton Park. He was until his death a member of the Ballarat City Council.

The photo on your screen is an application for a mining lease by Edward Morey in 1880 which shows Chinese settlers living amongst European Settlers along the Linton-Naringhil Road. The township is just to the north, Linton Park on the right hand side.
